Privacy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace
Project Overview
This project is part of NIST's National Strategy for Trusted Identities in
Cyberspace (NSTIC) project, and is being carried out jointly with Georgia Tech
Research Institute (GTRI). GTRI is developing a Trustmark Framework for NSTIC,
details of which can be found on the GTRI NSTIC Trustmark Pilot Web
site. Our privacy research on this project is focused on defining granular
privacy principles for
use in NSTIC. These privacy principles have several uses:
- they can be used
to define privacy trustmarks that can be issued to identity providers,
attribute providers, and service providers for certification of their privacy
policies and practices (GTRI has defined an initial set of privacy trustmarks
based on a subset of our granular principles),
- they can be used to assess privacy policies of
organizations to determine where their strengths and weaknesses are, and
-
by leveraging the first two uses, they can provide guidance to users as to how
their personal information is handled by the entities that they interact with
in cyberspace.
